personality.
First things first, Fei has multiple personality disorder, so things are complex with him.
The Fei that one will generally encounter is a nineteen year old young man with memories from only three of those years. This Fei is good-natured, good-hearted and mostly peaceful by preference, all of which ultimately causes him a great deal of angst and internal conflict when he's forced into conflict. He's personable, friendly, and maybe even a bit silly - given to jumping in wells and playing rock, paper, scissors or hide and seek with people. He is likable and well-regarded by everyone in Lahan, as well as by Citan's family. And though he practices martial arts, he has no love of battle - you could say he lives his life by the principle of knowing how to fight so that you don't need to fight. He was, however, protective of those he loved... and often impulsive as evidenced by his randomly jumping into a Gear to defend the village despite having no idea how to pilot one.
After the destruction of Lahan, he feels like a cursed man. He develops a hatred of fighting that goes farther and deeper than his simple preference for the quiet life had ever been, and refuses to involve himself in combat even for the good of others - this is a recurring theme, actually. Whenever things go significantly wrong (especially in a way that he blames himself for), he becomes difficult to talk to and begins to question whether there's any reason to fight, or any justification for fighting. He'll cut himself off from his friends or potential friends, falling into bouts of apathy and depression. The thing is, realistically, he actually is dangerous to others at times... and he is aware of that no matter how much people try to talk him out of believing it, even if he doesn't understand why. He's not actually stupid enough not to notice that when he gets overstressed, he tends to black out and when he wakes up everything around him is wrecked. This means that he doesn't actually mind being locked away in prison - all the better to keep himself away from people or stressors.
Eventually, he does regain his energy and sense of purpose - even some of his humor. He embraces the idea that his power makes him responsible for protecting others, but even more than that, he decides that being a part of something, fighting for people and being accepted by them, is something worth doing in itself.
So, he never loses his good heart, or his ability to see the better side in people. When he determines to save someone or something, he will risk everything to do so. Which doesn't mean he's perfect or in any way a messiah. He's not zen at all - to the very end, he has his moments of childishness or temperamental behavior. And, of course, there is the biggest of all his personality flaws: his inability to handle pressure, stress, rage or grief. He isn't completely fragile, mind you - he won't lose it over test pressure, for example, but he is a young and incomplete personality and thusof lesser strength than Id.
Which brings us to Id, his other active personality.
Id's name is no coincidence - he's directly named after the Id theorized by Freud, and that in itself is pretty telling regarding Id's personality. Id, the demon of Elru, is a man without conscience or restraint. He behaves as a cruel child, lashing out at anything that upsets him and being possessive of things that have meaning to him. His defense of those things is frequently violent and aggressive, and he will mow down anything in his path without regret. Sometimes, he will mow down things that aren't in his path, too.
Id enjoys a challenge, as he is easily bored. And though he has no true sense of fair play, like a child he expects fairplay from others when directed at him. Id is... brutal and petty. He was created to absorb the pain inflicted on Fei and to embody the resultant hatred and pain he felt, but he was also created as a guardian personality and acts to lessen Fei's pain in many cases - he'll destroy anything that truly threatens Fei or causes him significant upset. Even so, he shows considerable disdain for The Coward, who sees as hiding in safety while expecting him to do all the dirty work. He admits that his anger makes him want to destroy everything, and that is the source of his violent behavior. He also lacks the emotional ties that Fei has made, and is therefore difficult to get through to even by Fei's closest friends and loved ones.
Another thing about Id is, since he is a personality closer to Fei's 'true' self, he's more world-wise and actively intelligent than Fei, who can be very naive and dense due to his relative youth as a personality. Id's speech pattern, when he's not throwing a tantrum, is more sophisticated and he shows greater insight into people's personalities and motivations than Fei ever does. He also possesses the memories of Abel's previous incarnations and so, presumably, has greater access to his knowledgebase and skills.
The last thing to note about Fei is, he's very prone to flashbacks. And some of them are flashes to previous lives.
powers.
✣SUPERHUMAN PHYSICAL POWERS are self-explanatory. Fei is superhuman in every physical sense, possessing superstrength, speed and endurance, resistance to injury and enhanced healing speed. In his other persona, all of these are significantly enhanced. [Chi Umbrella]
✣CHI SPELLS allows Fei to use his Chi powers to various effects as described below. [Chi Umbrella]
- INNER HEALING heals a single person.
- GUIDED SHOT a low-power energy bolt that affects a single person.
- RADIANCE a medium-powered energy bolt that affects a single person.
- BIG BANG opens a pseudo-black hole, which basically means an area energy attack with high damage.
- IRON VALOR increases Fei's strength a marginal amount.
- COUNTER FORCE increases reflexes, allowing Fei to counterattack when struck more effectively.
- YANG POWER increases his strength while reducing his resistance to injury.
- YING POWER increases his resistance to injury while reducing his strength.
✣ELEMENTAL POWERS provides limited control over/ability to generate elements - specifically, he can generate fireballs around the size of a basketball or fiery shields that surround him for both offensive and defensive purposes, hurl bolts of electricity, freeze things, move relatively small segments of Earth to use as a weapon. As Fei, he can only do this as part of Deathblows (see below). As Id, he can access these abilities at will. [Chi Umbrella]
✣DEATHBLOWS are not one shot kill attacks or anything, despite the name. This just means Fei combines his martial arts attacks with Chi powers thus creating varied effects that... usually come down to hitting people harder and/or with energy bolts as above. Within the context of a deathblow, Fei can also do a few things he otherwise can't choose to do, specifically access some of his elemental abilities. [Chi Umbrella]
✣ZOHAR POWERS involves tapping into the energy source called the ZOHAR to create various effects that can be loosely described as psionic. Unless otherwise stated, only Id has conscious access to these powers. Sometimes Fei will use them, but he can't do it on purpose - more like they happen to him, really. He's not even aware that he's the one doing them.
- CLAIRVOYANCE allows him to see/dream about events happening miles away. He is not precognitive, just clairvoyant.
- TELEPORTATION allows him to, well, teleport. The limitations are unknown, but he can't teleport a building that's for sure.
- TELEKINESIS is, well, telekiness - a pretty standard application, albeit unusually strong. He's shown to utilize it for levitation, force bolts, standard lift/manipulate telekinesis, force shields, breaking things apart, etc. Probably the weirdest use is the way he changes his clothes.
- HIDING BEHIND TIMESPACE permits him to be in a place without being in the place. When in use, he is not visible and can't touch or be touched by others, but his voice is audible and he can see and hear his surroundings.
- ODD BODY POWERS involve the capacity to move (albeit with an extreme expenditure of mental energy) even when his brain signals are being prevented from reaching his muscles, defrost himself from freeze, that kind of thing. He can also touch noncorporeal objects - which is a power Fei does have routine access to.
✣SUMMON GEAR summons Fei's 45ft tall Gear, in the form appropriate for his current "form." The gear is controlled through a psychic/spiritual link and is capable of using Fei/Id's powers at a Gear-appropriate level. It no longer requires fuel, as it now runs on Fei's personal energy - but this means that the longer he has it out and the more strenuous the work he does with it, the more exhausted he is later. At its worst, the exhaustion effect can knock him out for several days. Between summons, the Gear is nowhere visible or findable.
abilities.
✣MARTIAL ARTS MASTER Fei is truly an epic level martial artist. Not much else to say about this!
✣GIFTED ARTIST He's also an excellent artist - though he only started three years ago (in this lifetime), he's already progressed far beyond his experience level due to the latent memories/skills of Lacan, one of his previous incarnations.
✣GENIUS+ (LATENT) This isn't something Fei's primary personality has ready access to, to be frank - he's a bit dense and unobservant. However, he does have the latent intellect of his "core" self and his previous incarnation, Kim, who was an unparalleled scientific genius.
✣SCIENTIFIC& MUSICAL AFFINITY (LATENT) Another thing Fei has no conscious access to but Id does - these skills are buried in his unconscious and can be easily revived if he gets into the subjects/starts practicing or studying them.
quotes.
Fei: I.. ran away from my village. Or what's left of it. It was a small village that existed between this forest and the mountain range. I ran away from there. It was a nice, peaceful village. Everyone there treated me like family.
Then, last night, a group of Gears suddenly appeared and started fighting right in the middle of the place. The village was engulfed in flames... I couldn't just stand there and watch Lahan be destroyed. So to try and save the villagers, I got in an empty Gear... without even knowing how to operate it. I just thought maybe I could do it...
No. It was more like someone whispering to me... Someone whispering to me, telling me to do it. But it was a disaster! The village... the village was destroyed... but me....
Yes. It was me. I destroyed Lahan. I'm sure of it.
✣✣✣
Fei: When I came to I was surrounded by piles of rubble! I didn't know what had happened or what I'd done. I remembered absolutely nothing. All I knew was that my hands could still feel what they'd done. The only things that penetrated the Gear's barrier were screams... screams, accompanied by the stench of blood, the sound of crushing bones and my own curses.
Look! Look at my hands! Can you hear their voices? Can you understand this feeling? The feeling of having destroyed your village with your own hands...? Of not being able to do anything for the children left behind? Now they have nothing... I have nothing... I have nowhere. No one.
✣✣✣
Fei: I will defeat this monster! But, if it looks like I'll go out of control like last time, then shoot me!
✣✣✣
Fei: I agree that a certain degree of strength is needed for self-defense. And if it weren't for this Gear here, Elly and I'd be in that Rankar's stomach right now... But its power goes beyond what is necessary. Does one really need the power to destroy everything?
✣✣✣
Fei: Errh, sorry about that! Just let me borrow this for a while!
(AS HE'S STEALING SOMEONE'S MOTORCYCLE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ENDLESS DESERT)
✣✣✣
Fei: No! I was just trying to save the village and its people! I never intended to destroy it!
Grahf: Is that really so? Surely you have heard it? It is the very dessence of you... the voice of desire from within you that craves destruction.
Fei: Shut up! Even if that were true, aren't you still the one who caused it? If you hadn't come the village wouldn't have suffered the way it did!
Grahf: Ah, so now you resort to blame? I see... that sounds like something "you" would say.
✣✣✣
Fei: My name is Fei. I was arrested for no apparent reason, shoved into that Aveh transport ship... And was nearly going to be sent to a concentration camp until you went and blew the thing to blazes.
✣✣✣
Fei: Your friends won't come and help us?
Bart: It'd be a waste of time waiting. They probably won't come.
Fei: But, aren't they your friends?
Bart: We believe in a liberal upbringing. They'll think we can escape by ourselves.
Fei: ...
Bart: What is it?
Fei: We wouldn't have fallen in here if you had only listened to me.
Bart: Don't blame it on me! You should've surrendered instead of challenging me. All i wanted was your Gear.
Fei: Don't be ridiculous! You're the one who blindly attacked me. What else was I supposed to do? I thought I might die if I didn't fight you.
Bart: I was taking it easy on you. Couldn't you tell? Then you're a bit dense. ... What! You want some?! Let's have it out! Right here!
Fei: I thought you wanted a truce for now? Getting out of here should come first! Once we're out of here, then I'll fight you all you want.
✣✣✣
Fei: Why are you fighting? What does fighting get you? What if this was your home?!
✣✣✣
Fei: What Bart's doing isn't for his own gain. He walks the path he believes in, one step at a time...wishing only for the happiness of those around him. I, on the other hand... I thought I didn't have a path that I could take laid out before me. But like he said, that's just running away. I must find my own path.
If Bart wishes, I'll cooperate with you guys. That's all I can do now. But I think I'll find the path I should follow as I help others like you. Moreover, I can't turn my back and ignore what such a terrible group of people are doing to others.
✣✣✣
Wiseman: Doesn't there have to be a reason or a goal for a person to fight?
Fei: My reasons for fighting are none of your business!
Wiseman: So, you are fighting for no reason or goal?
Fei: Would you shut up! I'm in the middle of fighting for my purpose!
✣✣✣
Fei: There's no reason for you to do this to yourself just so you can fight. There's no reason for you and I to fight... None at all. I'm here for you. It may not be much, but at least I can relate to how you feel, Elly.
Elly: What? Are you saying we lick each other's wounds?
Fei: No, that's not... Well. I guess I am. Sorry.
✣✣✣
Hammer: Do you think you can win?
Fei: No, I don't. But, for now, I can only give it a try.
✣✣✣
Fei: I know doc. I still don't like Gears. That much hasn't changed. When I pilot them, I become aware of how unstable my very 'being' is...even if I don't want to think of it! But at the same time, it is also a connection with some lost 'part' of me. If that's the case then, recently, I decided I would stick with it to the end. Elly also had been troubled by the same thing. And if I just stay depressed about it, nothing will improve!
✣✣✣
Fei: Do you enjoy this? Barging into someone elses country and destroying the place... Dragging innocent people into becoming victims... do you enjoy fighting that much? Is it that fun for you to watch people die?!
Look at this town! Take a good long look! This is what you've done? Does the word "duty" justify all of this? Does it?
It's just not like you. If you don't want to then don't do it. You shouldn't have to force it just to have a place to belong.
What was I fighting fro just now? You wanted to know? I don't really know. I know I was helping Bart and the others, but I still dont know wat I should do. Maybe I'm just looking for a place to fit in. But I think it's better to fight then it's worthwhile. That's not... nothing. It's something.
...I'm going.
Elly: No! You can't! Dominia is not like the other soldiers! She is an elite within the Gebler elite. She's one of the Elements, Ramsus' personal guard! You won't stand a chance!
Fei: Still, I have to stop this. Citan and Hammer have nothing to do with Kislev, but they're trying desperately to get the civilians to safety. Even Rico, who must hate this town, still stays with me. That's why I have to go.
✣✣✣
Fei: I've just been drifting around... being led by circumstances. Probably deep inside, I'm not really trying to help. Somehow, I get the feeling that all I've done I did because I wanted to be needed. That if I did something for them...then maybe, I'd have a place to belong... There's a side of me that comforts itself like that. That doesn't mean I don't want to help. But, that doesn't mean I really want to help either. It might not be 'nothing', but it sure isn't the 'whole' either.
✣✣✣
Fei: Actually, being imperfect makes mankind live by helping each other... That's what being human is... That's mutual understanding! That's 'unity' and 'love'... I'm glad - no, I'm proud! - to be human!
✣✣✣
Id: Are you strong?
✣✣✣
Id: That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... take it back!
✣✣✣
Id: Give it back, give it back... To you, it is just a used up toy. So give it back. It belongs to me.
✣✣✣
Id: Fine. You'll do fine as my toy... for today.
✣✣✣
Id: Heh... You. You've come to die, eh?
✣✣✣
Id: He ran away from that reality by entering into his memories! And now I continue my existence bearing all that hatred. You wouldn't be able to imagine what it's like!
✣✣✣
Id: My purpose is the same as his...total destruction. That and that alone. You're the ones who made me this way.
